For the Mamas:

Acupuncture increases blood flow to the uterus. It balances mom-to-be's system so she sleeps better, eats better, and feels her body more clearly. Acupuncture helps to even out hormonal issues and regulate the menstrual cycle. It's been proven to increase the efficacy of IVF and IUI (especially during the luteal phase and on the day of embryo transfer).

For the Papas:

It's not just for women: men with reduced sperm activity may benefit from acupuncture treatment.

Acupuncture is gaining a name in the fertility game because it has an increasingly solid reputation for helping couples get pregnant. Acupuncture, nutritional therapy based on Chinese medicine, and Chinese medical herbs help to improve fertility in both men and women.

At Acupuncture of Tarrytown, we are well versed in working with the needs of the individual person so that the challenges to fertility can be overcome. We are happy to work in conjunction with your conventional medical treatments; we are also happy to work with you through the modalities of Traditional Chinese Medicine alone.

The choice to build your family is a personal one, and we are here to work with you in whatever ways we can help.

Reasons for difficult conception are varied, so we wanted to break down some of the diseases and issues we see and commonly treat.

Do you know why acupuncture is so helpful with helping your little bundle of joy out of your body? Acupuncture reminds you that your body can handle this. In this series of treatments we reinforce that: over and over. We recommend one treatment each week during weeks 37-39, and then twice in your 40th week.

When the lining of your uterus goes rogue and begins to grow elsewhere in the body, this condition is called endometriosis. It is a huge culprit in pelvic, menstrual, and full-body pain for women, and can impede a successful pregnancy. Acupuncture helps to improve circulation (oftentimes, endometriosis leaves women with unknown batches of scar tissue) and reduces inflammation. It reduces the experience of pain and can allow a woman to more fully enjoy her baby-making experience.

Some women with heavier than usual periods, intense cramping, and bleeding or spotting between periods may have uterine fibroids. They are benign growths in the uterus that may cause painful intercourse and can also be a cause for infertility. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs can help to reduce the size of fibroids so that a woman's period isn't so difficult. Acupuncture and herbs are also helpful in conception when the size and/or location of the fibroids are an issue. When fibroids are very large, we work in conjunction with medical doctors to manage the patient's care and experience.

Luteal Phase Defect

The luteal phase of a menstrual cycle is post ovulation. The duration of this aspect of the cycle may be shorter for some women, and the length of time a woman is in her luteal phase is important in conception: if it's not long enough, your body may not be able to hold a pregnancy long enough. This is often due to low levels of progesterone, a key hormone in menstruation and conception. Acupuncture and herbs help to balance hormones and increase progesterone levels, thereby lengthening the luteal phase to more than 10 days.

Male Infertility

Most people think it's the ladies, but 50% of the time, the reason for a couple's inability to conceive has to do with sperm: they're irregular, they move too slow, there's not enough of them. Acupuncture and herbs can help with sperm amount and motility, as well as reducing stress and balancing hormones.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

PCOS is myriad of symptoms that includes, but isn't limited to, higher levels of testosterone, insulin resistance, and oftentimes the absence of a menstrual cycle. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs help to balance hormones and kickstart ovulation.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

PID is a sometimes serious disease that originates in an infection in the uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries. Depending on the severity, there can be damaging scar tissue as a result of the disease. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs help to reduce inflammation and increase circulation.

Did you know that when you're stressed out, it affects your hormones? Familiar with that 3 am wakeup call of your brain reminding you of that thing you did or didn't do the day before (or need to do today)? You're not alone. And stress, hormonal imbalances, and dietary choices all play a huge role in a woman's ability to conceive. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs help your body to better able to deal with stress, thereby reducing the circulating levels of stress hormones and balancing out other hormones to make conception possible.

Autoimmune Disorders

Oftentimes, autoimmune disorders are lurking behind a woman's inability to conceive. Fortunately, acupuncture and Chinese herbs can help by supporting and calming an overactive immune system.

Irregular Menstrual Periods

Sometimes you don't know why, but your cycle is all over the place. Acupuncture is a great option for rebalancing your period and getting you on track to a healthy pregnancy.
